Delhi: The Delhi government has decided to discontinue its Bed and Breakfast (B&B) policy after a devastating fire at a guest accommodation facility in Malviya Nagar claimed 21 lives, including several foreign nationals. The move was announced by Delhi Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra, who said a comprehensive review of all properties operating under the scheme would also be undertaken.
The decision follows allegations that the establishment where the fire occurred was functioning far beyond the limits permitted under its licence. Officials investigating the incident have indicated that the property was approved for a limited number of rooms but was reportedly operating on a much larger scale, raising serious questions about compliance and oversight.
Mishra said authorities would inspect all registered B&B units across the city and take strict action against those found violating licensing conditions. Properties operating beyond approved capacities or breaching safety norms could face cancellation of their licences, he added.
The tragedy has once again put the spotlight on fire safety enforcement and building regulation in the national capital. Preliminary findings suggest that the affected property lacked mandatory safety clearances and may have been using spaces in violation of prescribed norms.
Experts have linked the incident to a broader pattern of safety concerns in Delhi, pointing to recent cases involving fires and structural collapses. Urban planning specialists argue that stronger monitoring mechanisms and stricter enforcement are needed to prevent such disasters.
The now-shelved B&B programme had been introduced to promote tourism by allowing homeowners and small operators to offer accommodation to visitors. Hundreds of properties and thousands of rooms were registered under the scheme across Delhi.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the fire, which broke out in a congested locality and rapidly engulfed the building. Rescue teams managed to evacuate dozens of occupants, but many victims were unable to escape due to the intensity of the blaze and the building’s structural layout.
The government is expected to announce further measures aimed at strengthening safety compliance in hospitality establishments across the city.
