New Delhi: Heavy rain lashed parts of Delhi on Friday afternoon, September 4, bringing waterlogging to several areas and prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for parts of the national capital, warning of more rain and thunderstorms.

The weather conditions could also impact air travel. Air India cautioned passengers that flights operating to and from Delhi may be affected due to adverse weather and advised travellers to keep track of their flight status.

Neighbouring parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) are also under weather warnings, with Noida and Ghaziabad among the areas facing the possibility of further rain.

Delhi Red Alert: What Has IMD Predicted?

The IMD warned of spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across several places, with isolated heavy rainfall also possible.

The weather department’s latest warning indicated that another spell of rain and thunderstorms could affect Delhi during the evening hours.

IMD’s broader weather bulletin for September 4 has also forecast heavy rain over the Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi meteorological subdivision.

The unsettled weather comes amid the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area over central parts of northern Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southern Uttar Pradesh.

Rain Leads To Waterlogging In Parts Of Delhi-NCR

Several areas in Delhi and the adjoining NCR witnessed waterlogging following the rain, making travel difficult on some stretches.

Visuals from affected areas showed vehicles moving through waterlogged roads as rain continued across parts of the region.

According to three-hour rainfall observations, Palam recorded 3.4 mm of rainfall between 11:30 am and 2:30 pm, while Najafgarh received 0.5 mm between 8:30 am and 11:30 am. Rainfall, however, varied considerably across the capital.

Air India Warns Of Possible Flight Disruptions

The adverse weather could also have an impact on operations at Delhi airport.

Air India said flight operations to and from Delhi could be affected due to the prevailing weather conditions.

Passengers travelling through the capital have been advised to check the latest status of their flights before heading to the airport, particularly as weather conditions remain changeable.

Delhi Records Another Wet Spell After Rainy August

Friday’s rain comes after Delhi experienced a wetter-than-normal August.

The national capital recorded 354.1 mm of rainfall between August 1 and August 30 till 5:30 pm, considerably higher than the long-period average of 233.1 mm for the month.

Delhi had also received above-average August rainfall in 2024 and 2025.

On Friday, temperatures remained relatively moderate amid the cloudy and rainy conditions. The maximum temperature was expected to remain around the low 30s, while high humidity continued to add to the discomfort.

With more rain possible, residents have been advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions, avoid heavily waterlogged stretches and follow official weather and traffic advisories.
