Chandigarh: Newly appointed Punjab BJP chief Kewal Singh Dhillon on Thursday asserted that the Bharatiya Janata Party is committed to strengthening the agricultural sector in Punjab and ensuring Minimum Support Price (MSP) benefits for farmers across multiple crops.
Addressing the media after assuming charge as the state BJP president, Dhillon said Punjab’s farmers deserve broader procurement support similar to arrangements being implemented in neighbouring states. He maintained that agriculture would remain one of the party’s key priorities ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
Dhillon stated that Punjab requires a fresh political direction and claimed that many residents are now looking for an alternative after being disappointed with previous governments in the state. He expressed confidence that the BJP would emerge as a stronger force in Punjab in the coming years.
The senior BJP leader also emphasised that Punjab’s social fabric has always been rooted in communal harmony and unity. Referring to his appointment as the new state chief, he said Punjabis have historically stood together beyond religious identities.
Speaking about possible political alliances in the future, Dhillon avoided making any definitive comments but said the BJP remains open to working with groups that prioritise Punjab’s welfare and development. He added that any decision regarding alliances would ultimately be taken by the party’s central leadership.
Dhillon further said his immediate focus would be on energising the party organisation at the grassroots level and reconnecting with workers across districts. He stressed the importance of strengthening the BJP’s presence in villages, towns and urban areas alike.
Highlighting the Centre’s initiatives for Punjab, he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking decisions aimed at benefiting the state. He referred to measures such as the Kartarpur Corridor and other policies that, according to him, reflected the Centre’s attention toward Punjab.
The BJP leadership change comes at a time when political activity in Punjab has intensified ahead of the next Assembly elections, with all major parties preparing to expand their organisational reach across the state.
