Chandigarh: Several parts of Punjab witnessed a welcome shift in weather conditions on Saturday morning as rain and gusty winds brought temporary relief from the intense heat that has gripped the state for days.
Districts including Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Pathankot recorded light to moderate showers, leading to a noticeable dip in temperature. In some areas, especially Pathankot and Jalandhar, rainfall was accompanied by strong winds that offered respite from the scorching conditions.
Despite the brief cooling effect, weather officials have cautioned that the relief may not last long. A severe heatwave alert remains in force for the next two days, with temperatures expected to rise again once the current spell of cloud cover clears.
While several parts of Punjab experienced changing weather, Chandigarh continued to battle oppressive heat through the day. Residents in many areas reported discomfort as hot conditions persisted despite occasional strong winds.
According to meteorological data, Punjab’s average maximum temperature dropped slightly by nearly one degree Celsius on Friday. Bathinda remained the hottest location in the state, recording a high of 44.6 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh has indicated that cloud activity may continue over Chandigarh and Mohali over the next few hours, with the possibility of scattered showers and wind speeds touching up to 40 kilometres per hour.
This weather activity is expected to keep daytime temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius temporarily, bringing short-term relief.
However, forecasters say conditions are likely to change again from May 24 to May 26, with clear skies expected to return across most districts. Once cloud cover recedes, temperatures are likely to climb sharply, and some areas could once again record highs of up to 43 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have advised people to remain cautious, stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exposure during peak afternoon hours as heatwave conditions are expected to intensify again early next week.
