Chandigarh: Punjab Police have registered an FIR against Punjabi singer Rammi Randhawa at Ajnala police station for allegedly displaying weapons on social media. Randhawa, a resident of Ajnala in Amritsar district, came under police scrutiny after a video shared from his social media account went viral earlier this month.
According to police officials, the action was initiated following a post uploaded on December 13 in which the singer allegedly shared a video featuring weapons along with a caption that was perceived as glorifying gun culture. The post quickly gained traction online, prompting the police to take cognisance of the matter. So far, no official statement or clarification has been issued by Randhawa regarding the allegations.
Based on a complaint filed by ASI Kewaljit Singh, a case has been registered under Section 223 of the Indian Penal Code along with provisions of the Arms Act at Ajnala police station. In his complaint, the officer stated that he received information from a confidential source about a video circulating widely on social media. Upon verification, the video was traced back to Randhawa’s Facebook account, where weapons were allegedly displayed publicly.
Police officials said that public exhibition of weapons is a punishable offence as it can create fear and disturb public order. Authorities have maintained that such acts, especially when carried out on social platforms with wide reach, cannot be ignored.
The police are currently investigating whether the weapons shown in the video are licensed or illegal. They are also examining records related to any firearm licences held by the singer. The video in question is still reportedly available on Randhawa’s social media profile.
Officials reiterated that the law applies equally to everyone, irrespective of whether the individual is a public figure or a private citizen. Further action will depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
