Bihar: Rail movement on the busy Howrah–Patna–Delhi line was hit late Saturday night after a goods train derailed in Bihar’s Jamui district, officials from Eastern Railways confirmed. Eight wagons of the freight train went off the tracks, leading to significant disruption on the section.

The incident occurred around 11.25 pm between Lahabon and Simultala stations, which fall under the Asansol division. Authorities said there were no reports of injuries or loss of life, as the train was carrying goods and no passengers were on board.

The derailment forced railway officials to halt traffic on the affected stretch, impacting the schedules of nearly two dozen trains through the night. Several long-distance passenger services were delayed or diverted, causing inconvenience to travellers along the crucial eastern rail corridor.

Senior railway officials said emergency response teams were rushed to the site soon after the mishap. Accident relief trains and heavy equipment were dispatched from Asansol, Madhupur and Jhajha to clear the derailed wagons and restore the tracks.

Restoration work continued through the night, with railway engineers assessing damage to the track infrastructure and signalling systems. Officials said efforts are being made to resume normal train operations at the earliest.

An inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause of the derailment, officials added.
