Karnal, Haryana — A horrific road accident on National Highway-44 near Gharaunda in Karnal district has claimed at least four lives and left several others injured. The crash, caused by a truck allegedly driving on the wrong side of the road, shattered multiple families in an instant.
According to initial information, the speeding truck approached from the wrong direction, rammed into a Punjab Roadways bus, and then overturned on the divider. As it toppled, it crushed two motorcycles and a car, leading to multiple casualties on the spot.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred just a short distance from the toll plaza on the Panipat–Karnal stretch of the highway. The truck, coming from the Karnal side, suddenly crossed the divider and collided head-on with vehicles travelling in the opposite direction. Witness accounts suggest the driver may have been either extremely fatigued or under the influence of alcohol, which caused him to lose control of the heavy vehicle.
Passengers in the Punjab Roadways bus described moments of panic. The truck first hit the bus on the conductor’s side, triggering chaos inside. Harjit Singh, a passenger travelling from Delhi to Amritsar, said he felt a massive jolt before the bus came to an abrupt halt. When he looked outside, he realised a truck had slammed into them. Most passengers received minor injuries, but the impact created widespread shock.
Authorities have begun clearing the highway and initiating investigations to determine the exact cause of the incident. Police officials say strict action will be taken once the driver’s condition and responsibility are fully established.
