New Delhi: Marking Constitution Day on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to citizens across the country to place their duties at the forefront, emphasising that the strength of India’s democracy depends not only on the rights guaranteed in the Constitution but also on the responsibilities shouldered by its people.
In a special letter addressed to the nation, the Prime Minister highlighted that every individual’s commitment to their Constitutional obligations contributes directly to India’s progress. He called on educational institutions to observe the day with activities that recognise and inspire first-time voters, noting that encouraging young citizens to participate in democratic processes is central to nurturing a vibrant republic.
Drawing from Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy, Modi said that the fulfilment of duties naturally reinforces the system of rights. He noted that India’s social and economic advancement is deeply linked to how responsibly its citizens act in their everyday roles.
The Prime Minister also cautioned that decisions made in the present will influence the nation’s future trajectory, stressing the importance of acting with long-term national interest in mind as India strives toward its vision of a “Viksit Bharat,” or developed India.
In a post on X, Modi reiterated that the Constitution places “human dignity, equality and liberty” at its core. While these principles grant citizens significant freedoms, he said they must be paired with a conscious effort to uphold duties that strengthen democratic values.
PM Modi also expressed gratitude to the architects of the Constitution, noting that their foresight continues to guide the nation as it works toward comprehensive development and a more empowered society.
