Lakhimpur Kheri: A wedding celebration ended in tragedy early Wednesday when a small car carrying six men veered off a bridge and plunged into a river along the Dhakherwa–Girijapuri route. Five passengers lost their lives, while the driver survived with serious injuries.

According to preliminary police findings, the group was returning home to Bahraich after attending a wedding ceremony. Their Alto car reportedly skidded off the bridge and crashed into the river below. Investigators said the vehicle’s doors jammed on impact, leaving the occupants trapped inside. Local villagers who witnessed the incident alerted authorities, prompting police and rescue teams to rush to the spot.

The victims have been identified as Jitendra Mallah (23), Ghanshyam Mallah (25), Lalji Mallah (45), Azimullah (45) and Surendra Mallah (56). The driver was pulled out alive but is undergoing treatment for life-threatening injuries.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. His office stated that he has instructed officials to ensure the injured man receives the best possible medical care and has asked district authorities to accelerate relief and support measures for the affected families.

Police have initiated further inquiries to determine the exact cause of the accident.
