Washington, D.C.: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that negotiations with Iran are moving forward on multiple fronts, stressing that Washington’s long-term objective remains the complete elimination of Tehran’s nuclear weapons capability, while immediate efforts are focused on ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Speaking about the ongoing diplomatic process, Rubio said any lasting agreement with Iran must guarantee that the country never acquires a nuclear weapon. He reiterated that President Donald Trump’s administration considers Iran’s denuclearisation the central goal of future negotiations.
At the same time, Rubio noted that the immediate diplomatic focus is on the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategically important shipping routes. He said the United States is participating in discussions involving Oman and Iran aimed at improving the safe passage of commercial vessels through the waterway amid heightened regional tensions.
According to Rubio, the talks have produced encouraging developments, although a final agreement has not yet been reached. He expressed optimism that negotiators could make further progress in the near future.
“The ultimate objective is the denuclearisation of Iran,” Rubio said, adding that the current negotiations are intended to create stability in the region while broader discussions on Iran’s nuclear programme continue.
The Strait of Hormuz has remained a key flashpoint in recent months, with concerns over maritime security and energy supplies prompting diplomatic engagement involving regional and international stakeholders.
Rubio’s remarks come as Washington continues to pursue a dual-track strategy of diplomacy and pressure, seeking both a reduction in immediate security risks in the Gulf and a comprehensive agreement addressing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Negotiations remain ongoing, with no final breakthrough announced so far.
