Rupnagar (Punjab): A witness in a case linked to Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh narrowly escaped unharmed after an alleged firing incident near Morinda in the early hours of the morning. Punjab Police, however, have clarified that the incident appears to have stemmed from a road rage dispute and not from the witness’s involvement in the legal proceedings against the jailed MP.
According to police, the incident took place at around 2 a.m. when Varinder Singh Mavi, a resident of Salempur village and a complainant in the Ajnala case involving Amritpal Singh, contacted authorities alleging that an individual had opened fire at him.
Police teams rushed to the location and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings suggest that the accused, identified as Jasbir Singh alias Kala of Samroli village, allegedly got into an altercation with Mavi following a traffic-related dispute while reportedly under the influence of alcohol.
Investigators said the accused allegedly fired a shot into the air, pursued Mavi’s vehicle up to his village and also threatened people accompanying him before being apprehended by the police. No injuries were reported in the incident.
An FIR has been registered at Sadar Morinda Police Station under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Police said further investigation is underway.
The incident quickly gained attention on social media, where several users claimed the firing was an attempt by supporters of Amritpal Singh to intimidate a key witness. However, senior police officials have dismissed these claims, stating that no evidence has emerged so far to suggest any connection between the accused and the witness’s role in the case against the MP.
Rupnagar Senior Superintendent of Police Maninder Singh said the investigation currently points to a road rage incident and urged people not to rely on unverified social media narratives while the inquiry is in progress.
Meanwhile, Advocate Parminder Singh Wig, who represents complainants and witnesses in cases related to Amritpal Singh, expressed concern over the safety of witnesses. He said the episode underscores the need for effective implementation of witness protection measures and called on the authorities to ensure adequate security for individuals involved in sensitive cases.
Police have said all angles are being examined, but emphasised that no conclusions should be drawn until the investigation is completed.
