Mecca: The Saudi-led military coalition warned on Wednesday that the sanctity and security of Islam’s two holiest sites represent an uncompromising red line, following the interception and destruction of an armed drone launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement toward Mecca. Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces intercepted the unmanned aerial vehicle on Tuesday evening at approximately 6:50 p.m. local time south of the holy city, bringing it down before it could breach Mecca’s prohibited airspace.
Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki condemned the launch as a hostile and terrorist act intended to endanger pilgrims, worshippers, and local residents. Terming the incident the second direct attempt by the militia to target Mecca following a July 2017 ballistic missile interception, Al-Malki affirmed that the Joint Forces Command will not hesitate to enforce necessary and deterrent retaliatory measures against Houthi forces.
The confrontation marks a sharp escalation in cross-border hostilities between Riyadh and the Yemeni group, unfolding against broader regional frictions surrounding commercial navigation across the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. Prior to the intercepted attack, Houthi military spokesperson Brigadier General Yahya Saree alleged that coalition aircraft launched 52 air strikes over a 24-hour period against multiple governorates, warning that the operations would invite direct retaliation, while political bureau representatives dismissed the Mecca targeting claims as baseless rhetoric.
