Israel Election Throws Coalition Politics Into Focus as Netanyahu Allies Lead With 53 Seats

JERUSALEM: Israel’s latest election figures have placed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political camp ahead in the preliminary seat count, but the numbers suggest that securing a parliamentary majority could remain a difficult task for either side.

Data released by Israel’s Central Elections Committee at 11.35 pm local time showed Netanyahu-aligned parties leading with 53 seats, while the opposing Jewish-led bloc was projected to win 48. The figures were based on approximately 90 per cent of votes counted across 97.5 per cent of ballot boxes, according to The Times of Israel.

With the Knesset comprising 120 members, a coalition needs at least 61 seats to command a majority. Although parties opposing Netanyahu collectively accounted for 67 seats in the preliminary breakdown, differences over potential coalition partners could prevent them from translating that advantage into a government.

Opposition Unity Emerges as Key Question

The results have brought renewed attention to the divisions within Israel’s opposition. The 48 seats attributed to Jewish-led opposition parties, alongside 19 seats held by Arab-led factions, give Netanyahu’s opponents a combined numerical advantage.

However, several Jewish-led parties have been reluctant to enter partnerships with Arab-led groups, creating uncertainty over whether a stable alternative coalition can be assembled.

Yashar chairman Gadi Eisenkot, a leading opposition figure, portrayed the election outcome as a rejection of the current administration. In a statement posted on X, he criticised Netanyahu’s government over the October 7 attacks and disagreements surrounding military conscription.

Eisenkot said he intended to continue working towards a change of government and the establishment of a coalition committed to military service requirements.

His comments signalled that the opposition was preparing for further political negotiations despite the obstacles facing its potential alliance.

Final Count Could Alter Seat Distribution

The election picture remains provisional, with officials continuing to process outstanding ballots. One category drawing attention is the double-envelope vote, which includes ballots cast by active-duty soldiers and is typically counted later in the process.

The final figures could therefore differ from the current projections, potentially affecting the balance between political factions.

Several smaller parties also remained below the required electoral threshold of 3.25 per cent. The Reservists were polling at 2.6 per cent, the People of Israel at 1.6 per cent and the Charedi Public faction at 0.2 per cent in the reported figures.

Whether any of these parties can cross the threshold as counting progresses remains relevant to the final parliamentary composition.

Democrats Leader Signals Coalition Discussions

Yair Golan, head of the left-wing Democrats party, has also indicated that consultations on forming a government are being considered.

Speaking to the media after polling ended, Golan said he planned to meet three party leaders to discuss possible paths towards government formation. He did not identify the individuals involved.

The proposed meetings come as political leaders assess their options in a contest where seat totals alone may not determine the eventual outcome.

For Netanyahu, the immediate challenge is to turn his bloc’s lead into a workable governing majority. For his opponents, the task is more complicated: they must not only coordinate across party lines but also resolve disagreements over cooperation with Arab-led factions.

Until the remaining votes are counted and coalition talks produce clearer alignments, Israel’s political future remains uncertain. The final seat allocation and the willingness of parties to negotiate will be central to determining who can form the next government.
