Tehran: Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Khamenei has called for an end to the region’s current state of “neither war nor peace”, with President Masoud Pezeshkian directing his government to implement the Leader’s decree and strengthen the country’s preparedness against external threats.

Addressing the cabinet, Pezeshkian described the directive as an important policy direction and said the government would work earnestly to fulfil it using all available resources.

According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the cabinet discussed the country’s current situation, crisis management, national resilience and measures to counter threats. Pezeshkian stressed the need for continuous readiness to respond to changing circumstances.

He said ministers and senior officials across the executive branches must remain fully prepared and use existing capacities to improve productivity and strengthen national power.

The Iranian president also called for greater resilience against threats, sanctions and external pressure, warning that adversaries should not assume they could weaken the Iranian people’s resolve or force the country to surrender.

During the meeting, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi briefed the cabinet on diplomatic developments and regional consultations. These included visits by a Qatari delegation and Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff.

US Opens Channel to Iranian Security Official

The developments come amid reports of a separate diplomatic initiative by Washington to explore the possibility of reviving negotiations with Tehran.

According to The Wall Street Journal, US Vice President JD Vance sent a letter to Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

The reported outreach was intended to assess whether the two countries could establish a framework for negotiations. Citing a person familiar with the matter, the newspaper reported that the letter was sent at US President Donald Trump’s direction and that Trump remained informed about the initiative.

The reported communication suggests that Washington is exploring a channel to Tehran even as Iran’s leadership calls for a change in the region’s prolonged state of uncertainty.

However, the available report does not establish whether the outreach has led to an agreement to resume formal negotiations.

Regional Tensions Remain Uncertain

The diplomatic developments come against a backdrop of continuing uncertainty across West Asia. The US midterm elections, scheduled for November 3, and political uncertainty surrounding Israel’s next government are among the factors shaping the wider regional environment.

Iran’s emphasis on preparedness and resistance to external pressure, alongside the reported US outreach, highlights the competing approaches to managing tensions between the two countries.

Whether the latest communication can lead to a formal negotiating framework remains unclear, while the region continues to face the risk of further escalation.
