Lebanon/Washington: A temporary ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel has been prolonged by three weeks following high-level discussions held at the White House, according to Donald Trump.
The meeting, hosted in the Oval Office, brought together Israeli envoy Yechiel Leiter and Lebanon’s ambassador Nada Moawad for a fresh round of US-mediated dialogue. The development comes amid heightened tensions in the region, with recent Israeli strikes reportedly causing multiple casualties, including that of a journalist.
Following the talks, Trump indicated that Washington would continue to play an active role in stabilising the situation. He also stated that the United States intends to assist Lebanon in strengthening its security capabilities, particularly in dealing with threats posed by Hezbollah, which was not part of the discussions.
Lebanon’s ambassador expressed appreciation for the US initiative and support, noting that continued cooperation could help the country move toward stability and recovery.
The extension of the ceasefire is being seen as a temporary but important step toward reducing hostilities, even as broader regional tensions linked to the ongoing Iran-Israel conflict remain unresolved.
Trump also hinted at the possibility of hosting further meetings involving Benjamin Netanyahu and Joseph Aoun in the near future, signalling ongoing diplomatic engagement to prevent escalation.
