Bolivia: At least 10 people were killed and more than 60 injured after a powerful explosion ripped through a military complex in Bolivia on Friday, causing extensive damage to nearby homes.
Authorities fear the death toll could rise to 15 as emergency teams continue to assess the impact of the blast and treat those injured.
The explosion took place at a military facility in Viacha, around 30 kilometres from Bolivia’s capital, La Paz.
What Caused The Explosion At Bolivia Military Complex?
The explosion occurred at around 2.30 pm local time in a section of the military complex where pyrotechnic material was reportedly being stored.
According to authorities, the fireworks were kept at storage facilities belonging to Bolivia’s Defence Ministry.
The exact cause of the explosion has not yet been established, and authorities are investigating what triggered the blast.
Dozens Injured, Homes Damaged In Explosion
Local health director Rita Nebraska said 62 people were reported injured, while warning that the number of fatalities could rise to 15.
At least 14 of the injured were shifted to hospitals in La Paz for further treatment. Among them was a girl who reportedly suffered third-degree burns.
Police, meanwhile, said more than 50 people had been injured in the explosion.
The impact of the blast was also felt in residential areas surrounding the military facility. Dozens of nearby houses were reportedly damaged, while windows of several buildings were shattered due to the force of the explosion.
Emergency Teams Deployed At Blast Site
Emergency services rushed to the military complex soon after receiving information about the explosion.
Ambulances, medical teams and police personnel were deployed to assist the injured and secure the affected area. Victims requiring medical attention were transported to nearby healthcare facilities, while authorities began assessing damage around the complex.
Officials are expected to examine the storage facility and other evidence at the site to determine the cause of the explosion.
