Washington: US President Donald Trump has reiterated his administration’s hardline approach toward Iran, stressing that any future agreement with Tehran must permanently prevent it from acquiring nuclear weapons while warning that military action remains an option if necessary.
Speaking to reporters, Trump claimed his administration had played a significant role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan, suggesting that diplomatic intervention helped avert a potentially catastrophic conflict.
“We prevented them from going to war. Without our efforts, the situation could have escalated into a nuclear confrontation,” Trump said, adding that Pakistan continues to maintain communication with Iran and is encouraging constructive engagement.
Turning to the Middle East, the US President said Iran must accept a “meaningful” agreement that addresses international security concerns. According to Trump, the proposed deal would categorically bar Tehran from developing nuclear capabilities.
“If Iran were to obtain a nuclear weapon, it would pose an existential threat to Israel and destabilize the entire Middle East,” he remarked, insisting that Washington’s objective is to ensure such a scenario never materializes.
Trump also defended recent US military operations against Iran, saying his administration would continue taking decisive action whenever American interests or allies are threatened.
“We have the strongest military in the world, and we have every right to defend ourselves,” he stated, while indicating that further operations could be carried out if circumstances require.
Referring to a recent security incident, Trump said an aerial platform had come under attack but credited rescue personnel for safely recovering those involved. He described the outcome as fortunate, noting that a potentially devastating explosion was narrowly avoided.
The President further revealed that negotiations with Iran have been underway for several months, expressing disappointment that progress has remained slow despite what he described as a fair proposal from Washington.
Trump argued that previous US administrations had handled relations with Iran poorly and maintained that his government’s approach was designed to secure a stronger and more durable agreement. He emphasized that the central objective of any future deal would be to ensure Iran is permanently barred from possessing nuclear weapons while preserving stability in the region.
