Islamabad (Pakistan): Serious concerns have emerged regarding the health of former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, with a report submitted by Supreme Court-appointed amicus curiae Salman Safdar claiming that he has lost nearly 85 percent vision in his right eye while lodged in Adiala Jail.
According to the report, Khan stated that his eyesight in both eyes was normal until October 2025. Thereafter, he began experiencing blurred vision and persistent visual disturbance. Despite repeatedly informing jail authorities about the issue, timely medical treatment was allegedly not provided. The report notes that his right eye subsequently suffered severe deterioration, resulting in almost complete loss of vision.
An eye specialist from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) was later called in, who reportedly confirmed serious damage caused by a blood clot. Despite medical intervention, it is claimed that only about 15 percent vision now remains in his right eye.
During his visit, the amicus curiae observed that Khan appeared mentally distressed and physically uncomfortable. The report highlights his anxiety over the loss of eyesight and the delay in receiving medical care.
It further states that since being transferred to Adiala Jail in October 2023, Khan has been kept in solitary confinement for over two years. The prolonged isolation, combined with his age of 73 and existing health issues, has been described as a matter of concern for both his physical and psychological well-being. The report alleges that he has not been granted access to personal physicians and that regular blood tests and basic medical facilities, including dental care, were not consistently provided.
Restrictions on meetings with family members and legal counsel have also been mentioned. Despite court directives, regular meetings with his sisters and other family members were reportedly not facilitated. Recently, he has been allowed to meet his wife once a week for about 30 minutes. Contact with his sons is said to remain limited.
The report warns that unless immediate medical evaluation and restoration of access to family and legal advisors are ensured, his condition could deteriorate further. Supporters of Khan argue that the findings reinforce longstanding concerns about his treatment and conditions of detention. However, no official response has yet been issued by government authorities regarding the contents of the report.
