Amber Heard Says Courtroom Battle Silenced Her Voice, Reflects on Life After Depp Trial

Los Angeles [US]: Actor Amber Heard has spoken publicly about the lasting emotional and personal impact of her highly publicised legal battle with former husband Johnny Depp, saying the experience has left her feeling voiceless and withdrawn from public life.

Heard made the remarks in a new documentary titled Silenced, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday. In the film, she reflects on how the prolonged courtroom proceedings and intense public scrutiny altered her relationship with speaking out and sharing her perspective.

According to reports by TMZ, Heard described feeling overwhelmed and marginalised during the aftermath of the trial. She said every attempt to express herself appeared to worsen her situation, eventually leading her to retreat into silence.

“I didn’t realise it could become so damaging for me as a woman who chose to speak,” Heard said in the documentary. “I feel like I’ve lost the space to use my voice. I’m not here to tell my story anymore. I don’t want to use my voice, and that is what troubles me most.”

The legal dispute began after Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against Heard over a 2018 opinion article she wrote for The Washington Post, in which she discussed surviving domestic abuse without naming Depp directly. The jury ultimately ruled largely in Depp’s favour, awarding him damages, while also granting Heard partial compensation in her countersuit.

Following the verdict, Heard stepped away from the spotlight and relocated to Spain, choosing a quieter life away from Hollywood and media attention. Since then, she has made few public appearances, and her professional prospects have remained limited.

In contrast, Depp’s career has seen a revival. The actor has returned to film projects and recently took on a directing role that includes veteran actor Al Pacino, marking a significant comeback after years of legal and professional turmoil.

Silenced offers a rare glimpse into Heard’s perspective years after the trial, highlighting the personal cost of one of Hollywood’s most closely watched legal battles.
