Washington: A federal immigration enforcement operation in the United States has led to the arrest of dozens of undocumented commercial vehicle operators, including 30 Indian nationals who were allegedly living and working in the country without valid legal status.

The arrests were made during a multi-agency initiative known as “Operation Checkmate”, carried out by the US Border Patrol in Arizona’s Yuma Sector. Authorities said the operation targeted individuals suspected of violating immigration laws while working as commercial truck drivers on American roads.

According to officials, 52 people were taken into custody during the operation conducted between May 11 and May 15. Of them, 36 were reportedly operating semi-trucks. The majority of these drivers were Indian citizens, while others belonged to Mexico, El Salvador and Russia.

Investigators found that some of the detained individuals possessed commercial driving licences issued by various US states, while others allegedly lacked valid licences altogether. Authorities further stated that several employment authorisation documents presented by the drivers were either expired or no longer valid under current regulations.

US officials said all those arrested have been processed under federal immigration laws and are expected to face deportation proceedings.

The operation comes amid increased scrutiny of commercial transportation and immigration compliance in the United States. American authorities maintain that the initiative is aimed at improving road safety and ensuring that only legally authorised and properly qualified individuals operate heavy commercial vehicles.

Officials argued that enforcing immigration regulations within the trucking industry is necessary to reduce potential risks on highways and strengthen oversight of commercial transport operations.

The arrests also highlight the growing focus on undocumented workers employed in sectors facing labour shortages. With immigration enforcement remaining a key issue in US policy discussions, similar operations are expected to continue in different parts of the country in the coming months.

The development is likely to draw attention within Indian communities in the US, particularly among those employed in the transportation and logistics sector.
