Mumbai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially extended the tenure of Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar for an additional year, ensuring he remains at the helm of the selection committee until the 2027 ODI World Cup. A senior BCCI official confirmed that this move is a renewal based on performance rather than a simple extension. Under current BCCI regulations, a selector can serve a maximum of four years, and Agarkar is now set to complete his full four-year term.
Agarkar was originally appointed in 2023 for a two-year stint. After receiving a one-year extension in 2025, the latest decision to keep him until 2027 reflects the board’s immense confidence in his leadership. During his tenure, the Indian team has seen unprecedented success in global tournaments. Between October 2023 and March 2026, the squads selected by Agarkar’s committee reached the finals of four ICC events, securing three major titles: the T20 World Cups in 2024 and 2026, and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Additionally, the team finished as runners-up in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Beyond the silverware, Agarkar’s leadership has been defined by bold and transitionary decisions. His committee successfully managed the phased retirement of veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket and made the tough call to move on from senior pacer Mohammed Shami in international formats. The committee also displayed a firm hand in the 2026 T20 World Cup selection by dropping Shubman Gill to accommodate in-form players like Ishan Kishan. With his future secured until 2027, Agarkar’s focus will now shift toward building a formidable squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
