Ludhiana: Tension gripped Jamalpur’s GTB Nagar area in Ludhiana late Friday night after a young man was allegedly shot during a violent altercation linked to an earlier dispute. Police have registered a case against two suspects and launched a search operation to trace them.

According to officials, the incident occurred around 10 pm in Bhamiyan Kalan locality when Rifal Gaba stepped out of his house to purchase curd from a nearby shop. Within minutes, commotion and shouting were heard outside his residence.

In a statement to police, Ajay Gaba, the victim’s brother, said he rushed out after hearing abusive language and saw a group of young men allegedly assaulting Rifal. During the scuffle, one of the accused reportedly pulled out a pistol and fired at close range. The bullet struck Rifal in the left thigh, causing him to collapse on the road as he began bleeding heavily.

The attackers fled immediately after the firing, allegedly issuing threats before escaping. Family members and locals quickly shifted the injured man to the Civil Hospital, where he remains under treatment. Doctors said his condition is stable but he is being closely monitored.

Police identified the main accused as Rajjat Verma, a resident of Guru Nanak Homes, and Variam Singh of GTB Nagar. A case has been filed under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, including provisions related to attempt to murder, unlawful assembly and use of illegal arms.

Investigators are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in the area to map the suspects’ movements and determine their escape route. Raids are being conducted at possible hideouts, and authorities say arrests are expected soon.

Preliminary inquiry suggests the attack may have stemmed from a previous rivalry between the parties involved. Police officials have appealed to residents to maintain calm, assuring that strict action will be taken against those responsible.
