Amritsar: A suspected sacrilege attempt was averted at Gurdwara Shaheed Baba Gurbaksh Singh Ji inside the Sri Harmandir Sahib complex after a man allegedly tried to approach sacred weapons displayed within the shrine.

The incident occurred during the ongoing Sri Akhand Path Sahib when the suspect, believed to be around 35 years old, entered the gurdwara premises and initially behaved like an ordinary devotee. According to officials, he performed parikrama before suddenly moving towards the sacred weapons preserved inside the shrine.

Alert sewadars and Sikh volunteers stationed at the gurdwara quickly noticed his actions and intervened. They managed to overpower the man before any damage could be caused and subsequently handed him over to the police.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) officials said the timely response of the sewadars prevented what could have turned into a serious incident at the revered religious site.

Confirming the development, SGPC Manager Major Singh said a formal complaint has been submitted to the police, demanding strict legal action against the accused. He stated that the man’s conduct appeared suspicious and warranted a thorough investigation.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that the accused is a resident of Uttar Pradesh and was acting alone at the time of the incident. Police have begun investigating his background and are trying to ascertain the motive behind his actions.

The SGPC has also launched an internal inquiry to determine whether the incident was an isolated act or part of a larger conspiracy. Officials said all angles are being examined carefully.

Meanwhile, authorities have assured devotees that security arrangements at the shrine complex remain robust and that the matter is being investigated comprehensively.
