Chandigarh: Senior Congress MLA from Kapurthala, Rana Gurjeet Singh, on Tuesday voiced strong objections in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, warning that Sikh history and traditions were being misrepresented and required urgent protection from external interference.

Speaking during the session, Rana Gurjeet said developments in recent times suggested that historical narratives were being altered, a trend he described as deeply concerning. He called on the House to adopt a resolution requesting the Union government to refrain from intervening in Sikh religious and historical affairs.

The legislator stressed that issues linked to Sikh heritage, beliefs and customs should be addressed by the Sikh community itself. According to him, any outside influence risks undermining the authenticity and sanctity of centuries-old traditions.

Rana Gurjeet also commended Aam Aadmi Party Members of Parliament Malvinder Singh Kang and Balbir Singh Seechewal for raising the matter at the national level. He specifically welcomed their demand to rename ‘Veer Bal Diwas’ as ‘Sahibzada Shahadat Diwas’, stating that the proposed change would better reflect historical truth and honour the martyrdom of the Sahibzadas.

He added that matters connected to Sikh history require a sensitive and consensus-driven approach, urging governments to respect religious sentiments and ensure that commemorations accurately reflect historical sacrifices.
