Amritsar: A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector was gunned down in broad daylight near Majitha in Amritsar on Sunday morning after unidentified attackers intercepted him while he was heading to work.

The deceased officer, identified as ASI Joga Singh, was serving in the Traffic Wing of Punjab Police and had left for duty early in the morning when he was targeted by armed men riding a motorcycle.

According to preliminary police findings, the attack took place at around 6 am when the officer was travelling on his scooter towards Amritsar. As he approached a stretch near Majitha, two men on a bike allegedly blocked his path and opened fire before fleeing from the scene.

Joga Singh suffered two bullet injuries, including one to the chest, and collapsed on the roadside. Since the area was relatively deserted at that hour, immediate help did not reach him, and he succumbed to his injuries at the spot.

The slain officer was a resident of village Ghaniye in Gurdaspur district and had been posted in the traffic division for some time.

Soon after information about the shooting was received, senior district police officials reached the location and secured the area for investigation. SSP Suhail Mir Qasim, along with DSP Kamalmeet Singh and SHO Karampal Singh, supervised the initial probe.

A forensic team was also called in to collect evidence, including empty bullet shells recovered from the site. Investigators are now examining CCTV footage from nearby routes and establishments to trace the attackers and establish their movements before and after the crime.

Police officials said all possible angles, including personal enmity and professional rivalry, are being examined as part of the investigation. Security agencies have intensified efforts to identify and arrest those behind the killing.

The murder of a serving police officer in such a brazen manner has sent shockwaves across the force and raised fresh concerns over law and order in the region. Authorities have assured that the accused will be tracked down soon and strict action will follow.
