Gurdaspur (Punjab): Chak Aaliya village near Dera Baba Nanak has been plunged into grief after the death of Manjit Singh, a young migrant worker who had gone to Kuwait nearly a year and a half ago in search of better livelihood opportunities.
Manjit Singh, the sole breadwinner of his poor family, had married only a year ago. His sudden death has left his elderly father, Jaswant Singh, and his wife devastated.
According to Jaswant Singh, who works as a daily wager, his son had spoken to his wife over the phone after returning from work a day earlier. He reportedly complained of uneasiness and difficulty digesting food. Although family members advised him to visit a hospital, he was unable to do so. The family last spoke to him around midnight on Friday, and by the following morning, a friend from Kuwait informed them of his passing.
The grieving father has appealed to both the Punjab and Central governments to expedite the process of bringing his son’s body back home for the last rites. Villagers have also urged the authorities to provide financial assistance to the bereaved family, which has been struggling with economic hardship, especially after the earlier death of Manjit’s mother.
