Chandigarh: The Punjab government has announced an extension of school holidays across the state in view of severe winter conditions, with all schools set to reopen on January 8. Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains confirmed that government, aided, recognised and private schools will remain closed until January 7 to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.

In a statement shared on social media, Bains said the decision was taken on the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann after reviewing the prevailing cold wave and dense fog conditions in the region. He stressed that the move was aimed at protecting children from health risks and difficulties related to commuting during extreme weather.

Punjab has been witnessing unusually low temperatures accompanied by thick fog, disrupting daily life and raising safety concerns, particularly during early morning hours. Authorities have advised parents to avoid unnecessary travel for children and to follow official weather updates during the extended holiday period.

Schools across the state are expected to resume normal academic activities from January 8, subject to improvement in weather conditions. The government said it continues to closely monitor the situation and will take further decisions if required in the interest of public safety.
