Sri Anandpur Sahib: In a spiritually charged atmosphere marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, the Punjab Legislative Assembly convened a special session at Sri Anandpur Sahib on Monday. During the historic sitting, Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann moved a resolution to officially designate Amritsar, Anandpur Sahib and Talwandi Sabo as “Holy Cities”.

The Chief Minister said the demand to grant spiritual recognition to these towns had been pending for decades. He noted that each of these cities holds deep religious significance — Amritsar as the heart of Sikh faith and home to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Anandpur Sahib as the birthplace of the Khalsa, and Talwandi Sabo as the centre of learning and spiritual wisdom at Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.

The resolution received unanimous support from all parties in the House, marking a rare moment of unity. Lawmakers raised their hands in agreement, clearing the proposal without any opposition. This is the first time the Assembly has taken such a major decision on spiritual heritage while meeting in a holy town.

With the passage of the resolution, the sale and consumption of meat, liquor and tobacco will now be completely banned in all three cities. Shops and outlets dealing in these items will no longer be permitted to operate, and individuals will not be allowed to use such products within these city limits. Officials said the move aims to protect the sacred atmosphere, cultural identity and religious sanctity of these revered places.

Chief Minister Mann said the declaration holds special meaning as it coincides with the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib, whose sacrifice has long inspired people to uphold truth, faith and courage. He added that the step reinforces the Guru’s message of spiritual integrity and communal harmony.
