BARNALA — Delivering a stern message to the embattled state unit, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday, February 28, 2026, declared that internal indiscipline and individual agendas would no longer be tolerated in the Punjab Congress. Speaking at a massive ‘Kisan Mazdoor’ rally at the Barnala Grain Market, Gandhi issued a blunt “two-word” ultimatum to the regional leadership: “Be Team Players.” He cautioned that anyone who fails to align with the party’s collective vision would be promptly sidelined.
During a speech focused on restoring unity ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, Gandhi took a direct swipe at high-profile leaders who have often placed personal aspirations above the party’s interests. “Let me be very clear—no leader, regardless of their stature, is bigger than the Congress party,” Gandhi said to a roaring crowd. He warned that the high command would not hesitate to enforce accountability: “If you are not a team player, I will have no hesitation in putting you in the reserves.”
The Leader of the Opposition emphasized that defeating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP requires a seamless, united front rather than a series of “solo battles.” He argued that no single figure can win Punjab independently and that success depends on the synchronized efforts of every worker and senior official. This “straight talk” is widely seen as an attempt to suppress the persistent factionalism and public bickering that have plagued the state unit and frequently surfaced in the media.
Shifting focus to the agrarian crisis, Gandhi used the Barnala platform—a historic centre for farmer movements—to criticize the Central Government’s economic policies. He described recent international trade agreements and the reduction of MGNREGA support as “death warrants” for the state’s rural economy. “Punjab is the cornerstone of India’s food security,” he noted, asserting that the nation cannot remain resilient if its farmers and labourers are marginalized by decisions made in New Delhi.
The rally, organized under the leadership of PPCC President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, is being interpreted as the formal launch of the Congress party’s campaign to regain its foothold in Punjab. By choosing the Malwa heartland, where the party recently secured gains in local by-polls, the leadership aimed to demonstrate its growing momentum. The overarching message from the stage was clear: the central leadership is watching closely, and the “bench” is ready for anyone who disrupts the party’s progress.
