Chandigarh, October 5, 2025 — The Punjab and Haryana High Court has sternly warned advocates against using mobile phones, artificial intelligence tools, and Google searches during court proceedings, calling the practice “unacceptable” and “unprofessional.”

According to a report by Live Law, Justice Sanjay Vashisth took serious exception to the behavior of a lawyer who used his phone during a hearing and even seized the device temporarily to underline the gravity of the issue. The court said that such conduct violates courtroom decorum and undermines the dignity of legal proceedings.

“Firstly, using a mobile phone while addressing the Court reflects an unprofessional attitude, which cannot be condoned. Secondly, unlike iPads or laptops, which are integrated with case files and official records, mobile phones are not acceptable tools for arguments in court,” Justice Vashisth stated.

The court also criticized a lawyer who attempted to use his phone to search for answers to a question raised by the bench, noting that such preparation should have been completed before appearing for the case.

Justice Vashisth remarked that instances of advocates relying on mobile phones during hearings have been increasing, often causing unnecessary delays and interruptions. He emphasized that such habits must be curbed to preserve courtroom decorum and professional discipline.
