GURDASPUR — In a major development regarding the controversial Ranjit Singh encounter, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CGM) Court in Gurdaspur has directed telecom service providers to preserve the Call Detail Records (CDR) of several high-ranking Punjab Police officials. The judicial order, issued on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, specifies that call logs from February 20 to February 28, 2026, must be safeguarded to ensure a transparent investigation. This move follows a petition filed by a legal team comprising Supreme Court Advocates Ajay Marwah and Ravideep Badial, along with District Advocate Bhajanpreet Singh, who argued for the necessity of securing electronic evidence to maintain the integrity of the probe.

The court’s directive is comprehensive, encompassing the communication history and GPS locations of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurdaspur, the Station House Officers (SHOs) of Dorangla and Purana Shalla, and CIA In-charge Gurmeet Singh. Additionally, the order extends to all other police personnel involved in the encounter, as well as the telephonic data and location history of the victim, Ranjit Singh. Beyond telephonic data, the magistrate has instructed that any relevant CCTV footage from the vicinity of the incident site be secured and integrated into the official investigation immediately to prevent any potential tampering with the evidence.

Addressing the claims of injuries sustained by the police during the operation, the court has also mandated the formation of a three-member medical board. This board, constituted through the Senior Medical Officer (SMO) of Gurdaspur, is tasked with performing an exhaustive medical examination of CIA In-charge Gurmeet Singh, who was reportedly wounded during the exchange of fire. A detailed report from this independent medical panel must be submitted to the area magistrate to verify the nature and circumstances of the injuries. This series of judicial interventions marks a critical phase in the inquiry, as the preservation of digital and physical evidence becomes central to determining the facts of the Gurdaspur encounter.
