Amritsar (Punjab): In a chilling turn to the murder of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch Jarmal Singh, a gangster has allegedly claimed responsibility for the killing hours after the attack, even as police continue to investigate the brutal shooting at a wedding function in Amritsar.
Jarmal Singh was gunned down on Sunday evening at the Marigold Resort, where he had gone to attend a wedding. According to police, two armed youths entered the venue and opened fire while the sarpanch was seated with guests. He was shot in the head and rushed to hospital in critical condition, but later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, gangsters identified as Donny Ball and Prabh Dassuwal allegedly claimed responsibility through a social media post. However, the claim has not been officially verified. Police said they are examining the post as part of the investigation while probing multiple angles behind the killing.
The murder has sparked panic in the area and raised serious concerns over public safety. Jarmal Singh, a resident of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district and the serving sarpanch, had reportedly survived three previous attacks, suggesting he may have been under constant threat.
Police teams rushed to the marriage palace soon after the firing, sealed off the venue and began questioning guests and staff. Investigators suspect the attackers carried out prior surveillance and are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to trace the assailants and their escape route.
Authorities said efforts are on to identify all those involved and to establish the motive behind the killing. The investigation remains ongoing
