Amritsar: Acting Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj, on Thursday announced that a forensic investigation will be conducted into the controversial video linked to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, even as the Chief Minister’s explanation on related issues has been accepted.

Speaking to the media after meeting CM Mann, the Jathedar said the Chief Minister has been asked to suggest the names of two recognised forensic laboratories where the viral video will be examined. He stated that the purpose of the probe is to bring the truth before the Sikh community with complete transparency.

The Jathedar underlined that Akal Takht Sahib has a greater responsibility when allegations involve a person holding high public office. “When someone in authority is involved, it becomes even more important for Akal Takht Sahib to seek accountability and clarification,” he said.

According to the Jathedar, explanations were sought from the Chief Minister on matters concerning golak (donations), Sikh Rehat Maryada, and the video circulating on social media. While CM Mann’s clarification has been acknowledged, the Jathedar clarified that verification of the video through scientific examination remains necessary.

He further advised the Chief Minister to avoid public commentary on Sikh Rehat Maryada if he does not have complete understanding of its principles. In response, CM Mann assured that he would refrain from making statements on Sikh religious issues in the future.

Giani Gargajj also informed that the Chief Minister was provided with an official SGPC gazette, containing detailed accounts of the organisation’s income and expenditure. He urged CM Mann to study the document himself and share it with other leaders to prevent misunderstandings. Reiterating the inclusive nature of Akal Takht Sahib, the Jathedar said the institution harbours no hostility towards anyone and treats all who approach it with respect.

He added that the next course of action will be decided after a collective meeting of the five Singh Sahibans, which will be convened in the coming days. Only after due deliberation will any directive or decision be issued.

Government Acted in Haste on Sacred Saroops Issue: Jathedar

Addressing concerns related to the so-called “Bangar” issue, the Jathedar remarked that the government had acted in haste. He explained that sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib have historically been printed by various authorised religious institutions and installed in gurdwaras across Punjab and beyond.

He pointed out that many village gurdwaras house sacred saroops without preserved receipts or serial numbers, which does not render them unauthorised. “A saroop installed with respect in a gurdwara is sacred, regardless of paperwork,” he said.

The Jathedar noted that earlier, devotees often offered saroops to gurdwaras upon fulfilment of religious vows, though procedures were later tightened due to incidents of sacrilege. He added that disciplinary action has already been taken against SGPC members found responsible for lapses in the past.
