New Delhi: A Singapore-bound Air India flight carrying nearly 190 passengers was forced to return to the national capital early Thursday after the aircraft developed a suspected technical issue mid-air, sources said.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, operating flight AI 2380 from Delhi to Singapore, took off as scheduled on January 14 but was diverted back after the crew received an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) fire warning while the aircraft was airborne. The plane remained in the air for about an hour before landing safely at around 1 am, according to flight tracking data.

Air India confirmed the incident, stating that the operating crew opted for a precautionary return shortly after takeoff in the interest of passenger safety. “The aircraft landed safely in Delhi. Our ground teams provided all necessary assistance to passengers, and they were flown to Singapore on an alternative aircraft,” an airline spokesperson said.

The airline also expressed regret over the inconvenience caused, terming the situation unforeseen. Passengers were later accommodated on another aircraft to continue their journey to Singapore.

Data from Flightradar24 showed that the aircraft circled briefly before returning to Delhi, following standard safety procedures.

No injuries were reported, and aviation authorities are expected to review the technical alert as part of routine checks.
