Fazilka Observes Partial Shutdown as Traders Protest Rising Crime

Fazilka: Normal life in Fazilka was disrupted on Thursday after traders’ associations called for a citywide shutdown to protest the growing number of thefts and robbery incidents. The bandh, announced by the local trade board, is scheduled to remain in force until 2 pm.

Shopkeepers across major markets kept their establishments closed in response to the call, expressing frustration over what they described as unchecked criminal activity in the city. Traders said incidents of theft have become a daily occurrence, leaving both business owners and residents feeling insecure.

According to members of the trade board, repeated complaints to the police administration have failed to bring any visible improvement. They alleged that despite approaching senior officials on multiple occasions, effective action to curb crime has not been taken, forcing them to resort to protest.

Addressing the situation, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) said the police were open to dialogue and willing to meet trader representatives to address their concerns. He assured that efforts were being made to strengthen security measures and investigate recent cases.

Trade leader Ashok Gulbadhar said the decision to shut down the city was taken collectively after months of rising crime. “People no longer feel safe. We met the SSP twice, but the situation on the ground has not changed. This protest was unavoidable,” he said.

Gulbadhar added that a detailed representation would be sent to the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Director General of Police, urging immediate intervention. He warned that if crime continues unchecked, traders may escalate their agitation and consider a longer shutdown in the coming weeks, possibly after the Lohri festival.

The shutdown received support from various sections of the city, highlighting growing public concern over law and order in Fazilka.
