Mohali: A late-night protest at Chitkara University in Mohali turned tense after unverified claims circulated among students that two female students had allegedly gone missing.
A large gathering of students reportedly formed on the campus as concern over the rumours grew. The situation later escalated, with reports of vandalism and a confrontation between some students and police personnel. Videos purportedly showing the incident have also surfaced on social media.
Police officials, including DSP Sukhdev Singh, reached the university along with local officers and engaged with students and university authorities. Officials sought to establish the source of the claims and determine whether there was any factual basis to reports about missing students.
Police said that, during the initial assessment, students were unable to provide the names or identities of the two girls they claimed were missing. No confirmed information regarding the whereabouts of any specific student had emerged at that stage.
Authorities have nevertheless decided to investigate the matter rather than dismiss the claims outright. Police said students’ statements would be recorded and the information circulating on campus would be verified.
DSP Sukhdev Singh also appealed for calm, saying the campus remained peaceful and that security arrangements were in place. Parents were urged not to panic while officials continued checking the facts.
Police clarified that if their inquiry establishes that any student is actually missing, a formal investigation will be initiated and appropriate legal steps will follow.
The incident has attracted attention at a time when concerns over student safety remain high following the recent death of a 20-year-old student during a clash at Punjab University. Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation at Chitkara University as they work to establish what triggered the latest unrest.
