Chandigarh: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Ropar Range DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹8 lakh from a scrap dealer in Mandi Gobindgarh. The officer was caught red-handed in a trap laid by the agency at his Mohali office.
According to officials, CBI teams recovered ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold jewellery, several luxury cars and watches, and crucial documents during searches at Bhullar’s residence following his arrest.
After undergoing a medical examination today, Bhullar was produced before the CBI court, where the judge sent him to 14 days of judicial custody. When confronted by media persons outside the court, Bhullar said briefly, “The court will deliver justice.”
Sources revealed that the senior officer had allegedly been demanding monthly bribes from the complainant to allow his illegal scrap business to continue. Initially, the demand was ₹2 lakh, which was later increased to ₹6 lakh. Following the businessman’s complaint, the CBI formed a surveillance team and closely monitored Bhullar’s movements.
On Thursday, when the complainant reached Bhullar’s Mohali office to hand over the money, CBI officials immediately conducted the trap and arrested the DIG on the spot.
Officials said further investigations are underway to determine the extent of Bhullar’s alleged involvement in corruption and identify other possible beneficiaries of the illegal payments.
