Calgary, Canada: A Sikh taxi driver in Canada became an unexpected first responder after helping a pregnant woman deliver a baby girl in the back seat of his cab amid extreme winter conditions in Calgary.
The incident took place late Saturday night when temperatures had dropped to nearly minus 23 degrees Celsius. The driver, identified as Hardeep Singh Toor, was transporting a pregnant woman and her husband to the Peter Lougheed Centre when the woman went into sudden labour just a few blocks away from the hospital.
With no time to wait for medical assistance, Toor stepped in and helped the woman deliver the baby safely inside the taxi. Upon reaching the hospital, he immediately alerted security staff, after which medical professionals took charge of the situation.
Hospital authorities confirmed that both the mother and the newborn baby girl were healthy and stable. The timely intervention by the cab driver ensured a safe delivery despite the challenging weather and unexpected circumstances.
The incident has drawn widespread appreciation, highlighting presence of mind, compassion and humanity in an emergency situation.
