ABOHAR — A major tragedy was narrowly averted in the Abohar region on Saturday, February 28, 2026, when Jagmandeep Singh, popularly known as “Minku” Kundal, survived a lethal assassination attempt. The incident occurred in the village of Ratta Tibba while Singh, the former Sarpanch of village Kundal, was attending a wedding ceremony. The daylight attack has sent shockwaves through the Fazilka district, highlighting the persistent threat of gang-related violence in the border belt of Punjab.
According to local reports, unidentified assailants opened fire on Singh’s vehicle as he arrived at the wedding venue. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as multiple rounds were discharged toward the SUV. However, the assassination attempt failed due to the protective measures utilized by the former Sarpanch. Singh was travelling in a bulletproof vehicle at the time of the ambush, which successfully deflected the gunfire. The reinforced structure of the car ensured that the occupants remained unharmed, and no casualties were reported from the scene.
Sources within the community suggest that the attack is likely linked to a series of threats Jagmandeep Singh has received from the notorious gangster Arzoo Bishnoi. This is not the first time Singh has been targeted; a similar attempt on his life was reportedly made in village Kular just a few days ago. The political influence of the family has also seen a recent surge, as Singh’s wife recently won the Zila Parishad election from the Kundal zone, which many believe may have intensified the rivalry with local criminal elements.
The Fazilka police have launched a comprehensive investigation into the shooting and have cordoned off the Ratta Tibba area to gather evidence. Investigating officers are currently scanning CCTV footage from the village and surrounding entry points to identify the shooters and their escape route. Following the incident, security has been significantly beefed up across the Abohar sub-division. Senior police officials have assured the public that the perpetrators will be apprehended shortly and that the department is reviewing the security protocols for high-risk individuals in the region to prevent future escalations.
