Jammu: A tragic accident on the outskirts of Jammu has claimed three lives after a portion of an old bridge gave way during repair work, prompting authorities to order an urgent investigation.

The incident occurred in the Thuther locality of the Bantalab area, where labourers were engaged in restoration work on a structure that had suffered damage during last year’s flash floods. According to officials, the collapse trapped several workers beneath debris, triggering an immediate multi-agency rescue operation.

Teams from the police, Army, disaster response forces, and fire services worked through the night under floodlights in a prolonged effort to locate those trapped. Over the course of nearly 12 hours, rescuers recovered three bodies and pulled out two injured individuals, including one worker who was rescued earlier.

Among the injured was a senior official from the fire services who sustained injuries after being struck by falling debris during the operation. Both injured persons have been admitted to hospital and are currently receiving treatment.

Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary visited the site soon after the incident and took swift administrative action. Two engineers were suspended, while orders were issued for further disciplinary measures against another official.

The government has also set up a three-member committee to examine the circumstances that led to the collapse. Authorities have directed that the inquiry be completed within a short timeframe to establish accountability.

Initial reports suggest that the collapse occurred while foundation-related work was underway, but the exact cause will be determined after the investigation. The incident has raised concerns over safety standards at construction and restoration sites in the region.
