Chandigarh: The Punjab Police has secured the deportation of alleged gangster Gurwinder, also known as Afridi, from Ethiopia after an international search lasting around 10 months. He is identified by investigators as the alleged mastermind of the Doni Bal-Prabh Dasuwal gang and was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh.
The operation was carried out by the Anti-Gangster Task Force (AGTF) in coordination with the Counter Intelligence wing’s Overseas Fugitive Tracking and Extradition Cell (OFTEC), along with central agencies. The police said the action was conducted under ‘Operation Shaheed’.
According to preliminary investigations, Gurwinder was allegedly operating from abroad while directing criminal activities in Punjab, including targeted killings and firing incidents linked to extortion. He is wanted in connection with approximately 30 criminal cases.
Tracking the accused involved gathering intelligence and monitoring his movements across several countries. Police teams reportedly extended the search across parts of Asia, South America and Africa, using surveillance and technical resources to establish his whereabouts.
The Punjab Police also acknowledged the assistance provided by the Ministry of External Affairs and other central agencies in facilitating the operation and bringing the accused back from Ethiopia.
Officials said efforts to trace overseas fugitives and dismantle organised criminal networks would continue as part of the state’s campaign against gangsters and organised crime.
