Punjab Govt Weighs Curbs on Students’ Social Media Use, Pushes AI Learning in Schools

Mohali: With the growing influence of digital platforms on young minds, the Punjab government is exploring ways to regulate social media usage among school students while simultaneously promoting modern learning tools like Artificial Intelligence.

Speaking at an awareness programme in Chandigarh, Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains said a dedicated committee has been formed to study how social media affects children and what level of access should be permitted. The panel includes educationists, teachers, and officials from both the Education and Child Welfare departments.

The committee is analysing data from states that have already imposed restrictions on minors’ social media usage, along with regions where no such limits exist. Its findings will guide the government in framing policies aimed at protecting students from potential online harm without restricting their access to beneficial digital resources.

Bains acknowledged that despite existing rules barring individuals under 18 from creating social media accounts, many students continue to bypass these safeguards. He stressed the need for a balanced approach that ensures children remain connected to technological advancements while being shielded from negative influences.

Highlighting the state’s focus on future-ready education, the minister said Punjab has introduced Artificial Intelligence as a subject from Classes 6 to 12, making it one of the first states in the country to do so. Alongside AI, students are also being trained in coding, with the aim of equipping them with advanced digital skills by the time they complete schooling.

To encourage innovation, the government has expanded its “Business Blasters” initiative, under which students receive financial support to develop startup ideas. The programme has now been extended to colleges, where participation will also contribute to academic evaluation.

The minister also pointed to improved access to technology in government schools, including Wi-Fi connectivity and coaching support for competitive exams such as JEE and NEET. He said these measures are already showing promising results.

In addition, Punjab has been investing in teacher training, sending educators to national and international institutions, including programmes in Finland, to enhance teaching standards.

Bains emphasised that adapting to changing times is essential and assured that the government remains committed to strengthening the education system while addressing emerging challenges posed by the digital age.
