Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu Elevated to Supreme Court Along With Four Others

New Delhi: In a significant development for the Indian judiciary, the Centre on Monday notified the appointment of five High Court judges to the Supreme Court, further strengthening the strength of the country’s highest judicial institution.

Among those elevated is Justice Sheel Nagu, who has been serving as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His appointment to the Supreme Court has been welcomed by members of the legal fraternity, particularly in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, where he has presided over several important judicial matters during his tenure.

The other judges appointed to the apex court include Justice Venkata Subramani Mohana, Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, and Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court.

The appointments were formally announced through notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Monday.

Justice Sheel Nagu’s elevation marks another milestone in his judicial career. Known for handling a wide range of constitutional, administrative and public interest matters, he has served in different capacities within the judiciary before taking charge as Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The latest appointments come as part of the ongoing process to fill vacancies and enhance judicial capacity at the Supreme Court, which hears some of the most significant constitutional, civil and criminal matters from across the country.

With the induction of the five judges, the apex court is expected to gain additional strength in dealing with its growing caseload. The appointments also reflect representation from different High Courts, bringing diverse judicial experience to the Supreme Court bench.

The newly appointed judges are expected to assume their responsibilities at the Supreme Court following the completion of the necessary formalities.
