CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday reviewed the state’s flood preparedness and approved the purchase of advanced amphibious machines to strengthen flood prevention and relief infrastructure ahead of the monsoon. Chairing a high-level meeting, he said the move will help carry out desilting of rivers and drains in a smooth and effective manner, ensuring minimal damage and better protection of lives and property. He added that these machines can operate even in running water and perform deep desilting, making them crucial for both preventive measures and emergency response.

Referring to global best practices, the Chief Minister said he had witnessed the efficient use of such machines during his visit to Finland. He noted that these multipurpose machines can also be used for cleaning and maintaining rivers, drains, ponds and other water bodies, which will significantly reduce flood-related risks. He further highlighted water management concerns, citing that the water level at Bhakra Dam stood at 1594 feet on April 26 against its maximum capacity of 1680 feet, and stressed the need for proper planning of water release in view of the upcoming paddy sowing season starting June 1.

Reviewing ongoing works, CM Mann expressed satisfaction over the efforts of the Water Resources Department, noting that drain cleaning and desilting operations are progressing at a fast pace across the state. He also emphasized special focus on vulnerable areas like Ropar district, where preventive measures such as construction of stud and spur structures are being undertaken. Additionally, he directed officials to explore the feasibility of channelisation of the Swaan river for irrigation and tourism purposes, aiming to further strengthen the state’s flood management strategy.
