New Delhi/Moscow: India and Russia are working towards significantly expanding their economic partnership, with both countries targeting bilateral trade worth $100 billion by 2030, according to India’s Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar. He said the two nations are not only strengthening traditional areas of cooperation but are also exploring new sectors to deepen commercial engagement.
Speaking about the growing partnership, Kumar said energy remains a key pillar of bilateral ties. He noted that Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom continues to make steady progress on the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project in Tamil Nadu, with construction of Units 3 and 4 advancing as planned.
The ambassador also highlighted a sharp rise in the number of Indian professionals employed in Russia. According to him, the Indian workforce in the country has expanded dramatically over the past three years, increasing from an estimated 10,000–15,000 workers to more than one lakh at present. He described the trend as an important new dimension in India-Russia cooperation.
Kumar said preparations are underway for the next meeting of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Consumer Cooperation, where both sides will review progress made so far and outline future measures to achieve the ambitious trade target set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On multilateral engagement, the envoy said this year’s BRICS Summit, scheduled to be held in New Delhi next month, will provide another important platform for cooperation. He expressed confidence that Russia would participate at a high level, adding that bilateral engagement continues to grow alongside collaboration within BRICS.
Looking ahead, Kumar said 2027 will mark 80 years of diplomatic relations between India and Russia, a milestone both countries intend to celebrate with a series of events. Planned programmes are expected to span multiple sectors, including trade, technology, culture, commerce and people-to-people exchanges, reflecting the broad and enduring nature of the bilateral relationship.
The ambassador said India and Russia remain committed to strengthening strategic, economic and cultural ties while continuing to expand cooperation across emerging sectors in the years ahead.
