Gurdaspur: A former village sarpanch in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district had a close call after unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire at his residence early Saturday morning, prompting a police investigation into the incident.
The firing took place at around 5:30 a.m. in Kila Lal Singh village near Batala when former sarpanch Jasbir Singh Gill was reportedly walking inside the courtyard of his house. According to preliminary information, two unidentified individuals arrived on a motorcycle, fired multiple rounds towards the premises, and fled before locals could react.
Gill, who is associated with the Shiromani Akali Dal, escaped unharmed and immediately informed the police. He claimed that he had received threatening phone calls on two separate occasions in recent days and had already alerted local authorities about the matter.
Following the complaint, senior police officials, including DSP Lalit Kumar and SHO Inspector Prabhjot Singh, reached the spot to inspect the scene and gather evidence. The area was examined for forensic clues while investigators began collecting statements from witnesses.
Police officials said CCTV footage from nearby locations is being scrutinized to identify the attackers and trace their route of escape. The motive behind the firing remains unclear, and investigators are exploring all possible angles, including the earlier threat calls received by the former sarpanch.
The incident has created anxiety among Gill’s family members and residents of the village, who have expressed concern over the brazen attack in a residential area. Security agencies have assured that efforts are underway to identify the accused and bring them to justice at the earliest.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is progressing, and further action will be taken based on the evidence gathered during the probe.
