New Delhi: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama underwent a successful left knee replacement surgery at Apollo Hospital in New Delhi on Monday, with his medical team reporting that he is stable and in good spirits. The ninety-year-old Buddhist leader traveled to the national capital from his home-in-exile in Dharamshala last week specifically to address the long-standing joint issue.

A comprehensive medical bulletin issued shortly after the procedure confirmed that the operation was completed smoothly and without any complications. According to his personal physicians, including Dr Tsetan D Sadutshang, Dr Tamdin Tsewang, Dr Tsering Lhadon, and Dr Tenzin Tsundue, along with his secretary Tenzin N Taklha, the spiritual leader returned to his hospital room in stable condition. The medical team expressed deep gratitude to the nursing, administrative, and clinical staff at Apollo Hospital for their exceptional professionalism and continuous post-operative care.

This procedure follows a similar medical milestone nearly two years ago, when the Dalai Lama underwent a successful right knee replacement surgery in June 2024 at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Having made an excellent recovery from that initial operation, his medical team remains highly optimistic about his rehabilitation timeline this time around. Following his full recovery and post-operative monitoring in New Delhi, the Dalai Lama is expected to travel to the Ladakh region toward the end of June for an extended seasonal stay.
