Delhi: A Delhi court early Saturday granted bail to Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Uday Bhanu Chib, who had been arrested over a protest staged during the India AI Impact Summit in the national capital.
Chib was presented before Duty Magistrate Vanshika Mehta shortly after midnight following the completion of his four-day police custody, which had been approved on February 24. The Delhi Police had sought a further seven days of custodial interrogation, but the court declined the request and instead ordered his release on bail.
According to Chib’s legal counsel, the magistrate allowed bail on a surety bond of ₹50,000. The court also directed the IYC leader to deposit his passport and hand over electronic devices as part of the bail conditions.
The defence argued that investigators from the Crime Branch had not adequately justified the need for extending his police custody. The court, in its order, noted that sufficient grounds for additional remand were not presented.
Chib was taken into custody in connection with a demonstration organised by Youth Congress members at Bharat Mandapam, where the AI summit was being held. The event, which commenced on February 16, drew leading figures from the technology sector, policymakers, and entrepreneurs, and witnessed significant public turnout.
During the protest, some participants reportedly removed their outer garments to display T-shirts carrying slogans critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government, and the India-US trade agreement. Images of Modi and former US President Donald Trump were also printed on the apparel.
Police have alleged that the protest led to a confrontation between demonstrators and security personnel deployed at the venue. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, while Chib has denied any wrongdoing.
The development has added a political dimension to the high-profile summit, even as legal proceedings in the case move forward.
