MUMBAI — Digital transactions processed through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) scaled fresh operational heights in August 2026, registering an all-time record volume of 24.51 billion transactions, according to the latest figures released by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Tuesday. Total transaction value for the month reached 29.82 lakh crore rupees, hovering just shy of the historic peak of 29.9 lakh crore rupees recorded earlier in May and July.
The August performance represents robust year-on-year growth across both volume and value metrics. Transaction volume expanded by 22 per cent compared to the 19.63 billion transactions recorded in August 2025, climbing steadily from 23.66 billion in July, 22.72 billion in June, and 23.2 billion in May. Concurrently, overall transaction value witnessed a 20 per cent year-on-year rise from 24.85 lakh crore rupees in the corresponding period of the previous year, demonstrating resilient digital payment adoption across both peer-to-peer transfers and retail merchant settlements.
Established through a joint initiative of the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks’ Association, the NPCI oversees retail payment systems across the country. Since its rollout on August 25, 2016, the real-time settlement framework has transformed India’s retail payments ecosystem over a decade of operation, expanding total annual transaction turnover from 0.07 lakh crore rupees in the 2016-17 financial year to approximately 314 lakh crore rupees in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The digital payment architecture has also broadened its international presence, securing operational acceptance across 11 nations globally. In addition to recent cross-border enablement in Uzbekistan, international UPI linkages and acceptance mechanisms are functioning in Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, France, Mauritius, Nepal, Bhutan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Greece.
