Imphal: Security forces detained two persons on Saturday in connection with the ambush on an Assam Rifles convoy that left two personnel dead and five injured in Manipur’s Bishnupur district. Police also recovered a silver-blue van suspected to have been used in the attack.

The ambush occurred on Friday evening in Nambol Sabal Leikai, where armed men opened fire on a vehicle of the paramilitary force. The sudden assault led to the deaths of two jawans and injuries to five others, sparking a massive counter-operation by security forces.

In a late-night statement, Manipur Police confirmed that a joint operation was carried out in Shantipur and Ishok areas, leading to the detention of two individuals for verification. The recovered van was found abandoned at Mutum Yangbi in Imphal West district, around 10 km from the ambush site.

Police said preliminary investigations revealed the vehicle had changed hands multiple times, and efforts were underway to track its chain of ownership and establish the attackers’ identities.

The ambush has heightened tensions in the state, already grappling with law and order challenges, and security has been tightened in vulnerable areas to prevent further incidents
